Entrepreneur, philanthropist, public figure; born into a religious family in Minsk. He was a supplier to the Russian army. He was active in providing help for needy Jewish students in St Petersburg's educational institutions. Together with his bother Lev he founded a Jewish children's home in St Petersburg, where he organised courses in craftsmanship for the inmates. He was on of the founders of the ORT provisional committee.
