Painter and theatrical artist. He first became known in the 1920s for his works depicting the life of Jews in Belorussia. In the 1930s he made a number of journeys to Jewish kolkhozes in Ukraine, Crimea, Belorussia and Birobidzhan. He worked as an artist in GOSET (the State Yiddish Theatre) in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk. During the war he produced a series of works with the title "Ghetto".
